Uferstudios
The Uferstudios for contemporary dance are at once rehearsal, venue and training centre - made for and used by independent artists from the Berlin contemporary dance scene. A diverse programme that ranges from work in progress presentations to lectures, discussions, premieres and performances by choreographers as well as festivals fill the 16 studios of the extensive premises on the banks of the Panke in Wedding.
The area now used by the Uferstudios was used shortly after the founding of the Greater Berlin Horse Tram Company in 1873 as its depot. When the electric tram service replaced horses between 1896 and 1902 the buildings were converted to accommodate their new use. Between 1926 and 1931 the characteristic glazed brick buildings were erected by the architect Jean Krämer, combining the clear lines of New Objectivity architecture with expressive motifs. After the Second World War the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (Berlin Transport Company or BVG) used the workshops on both sides of Uferstraße for the maintenance of their busses, selling the area in 2007/8 to the private landlords Uferhallen Immobilien AG. The Uferstudios GmbH leased the buildings on the former Panke island for 25 years from 2008. In 2010 the buildings were converted from plans by Anderhalten Architects financed by the German Lottery Foundation of Berlin and realised by Jahn Architects.
