Theaterhaus Berlin Mitte is the central production space and communication platform for the independent performing arts in Berlin. It is not just a production house however, but a venue in its own right. The small but perfectly formed studio space 003, the venue concept Durchbruch (Breakthrough) and last but not least its extensive green and open area make the Theaterhaus a lively and diverse space for independent theatre.
Emergent artists and recent graduates find the space to try things out here and show the results of their labour in a professional context, which are often impressive for their innovative energy and spontaneous immediacy. The house has also long attracted established directors and actors who like performing their productions here because of its special atmosphere. The programme comprises contemporary performance, experimental forms, classical repertory theatre as well as dance productions.
The house was founded in 1992 by the district of Berlin Mitte as a rehearsal space in Rosenthaler Straße. The aim was to support independent theatre makers by offering free rooms for rehearsal. After being temporarily located in a distribution station of Berlin's electricity board and a former primary school from the end of the 19th Century on Koppenplatz, the theatre has been at its current location in a former East German school building on Wallstraße since 2009.
The Theaterhaus Berlin also develops and supports artistic collaboration with international partners. In this way, it is not only known abroad as a location for intercultural encounter but has become an important stop on the itinerary of guests from all over the world.
