Theater Thikwa
The repertoire of the Theater Thikwa in Berlin's Kreuzberg district spans dance performances, text-based theatre, movement and music theatre and two-man comedies. The ensemble members develop the pieces with disabled and able-bodied authors, directors, choreographers, dancers, artists, film-makers, musicians and actors.
In the romantic Mühlenhaupthöfen in Kreuzberg, Theater Thikwa has operated a fully accessible venue with a main stage of 120 seats and a studio with 60 seats, together with the English Theatre Berlin. Thikwa stages between 10 and 12 new productions a year here with 70 to 90 performances. The Thikwa Workshop for Theatre and Art is also close to the theatre, where people with a broad range of disabilities are able to receive an education in acting, dance and visual art. The Thikwa Workshop is also where the 43 person ensemble rehearses.
The interest in the special abilities, ideas and means of expression of the Thikwa performers has grown more and more over the years. There are now many national and international co-productions with the group Monster Truck, the Deutschen Theater Berlin, students of the applied theatre studies course at Gießen University, the Theatre Studio Kroog II from Moscow and DanceBox Kobe. For the last 20 years, Thikwa has also been invited to many international venues and festivals with performances in Japan, Korea, Poland, Russia and Switzerland.
While everybody talks about inclusion, Theater Thikwa lives it. The history of Thikwa began in 1990 through an initiative by Christine Vogt and the founding members Hanna Näter, Gerlinde Altenmüller and Matthias Maedebach, their friends as well as colleagues from the Werkheim Zehlendorf. The founders of Thikwa aimed to promote collaborative work by disabled and able-bodied artists. In 1995 the Theatre Workshop Thikwa was established in cooperation with the Nordberliner Werkgemeinschaft (NBW) in order to train people with disabilities for professional artistic fields. Christine Vogt, Gerlinde Altenmüller and Matthias Maedebach shared the leadership role between 1993 and 2003 with Gerlinde Altenmüller taking on solo responsibility between 2004 and 2012. Nicole Hummel and Gerd Hartmann have been the directors of the Theater Thikwa since 2013.
Thikwa (tiqva) is hope in Hebrew.
