Theater an der Parkaue
Junges Staatstheater Berlin
Since its opening in 1950, the THEATER AN DER PARKAUE - Junges Staatstheater Berlin has offered children and young people, students and teachers, families and visitors of all ages on three stages as well as in its art mediating work room for first encounters and ever new points of contact with theatre in its manifold forms. From associative performances to detailed stagings, from classics to contemporary drama, from laboratories to social games - the Parkaue, as a place for exploring and experimenting together, offers different perspectives and invites you to discover the diversity of aesthetics and teaching as well as art as your own world of experience. With its productions, art education projects and festivals, it is regarded as a permanent fixture in the national and international children's and youth theatre scene.
The renaissance-influenced architectural complex of buildings of today's THEATRE AN DER PARKAUE reflects Germany's political history. The building was erected as a boy's high school in 1911 from designs by the chief city planner Johannes Uhlig and the architect Wilhelm Grieme. As part of the Nazi regime's instrumentalisation of educational establishments, the school was called the 'Josef-Goebbels-Schule' after 1934. In 1948 the school building was converted to cultural uses by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany. Alongside lessons in performing arts, music, fine art and natural history, the building also hosted a miniature observatory, workshops, studios, a library, a cinema and the Friendship Theatre during this time. In 1959 Ilse Weintraut-Rodenberg became the artistic director for almost the next 15 years, leading the first theatre in Berlin dedicated exclusively to children and young people. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the city government appointed Manuel Schöbel to lead the theatre in 1991. From 2005 to 2019 Kay Wuschek was the director of the house. Florian Stiehler is currently the managing director and provisional artistic director of THEATER AN DER PARKAUE.
