The Palais am Festungsgraben was built in 1753 as Donnersches Palais for private use. In 1787, the Prussian tax authorities moved into the house under the direction of Freiherr von und zum Stein. As the only palace in Unter den Linden undestroyed, the first concert and theater events took place here in 1945 after the war. Between 1950 and 1990 it was the central house of the German-Soviet friendship. Since 1991, the building has been the foundation and venue of THEATER IM PALAIS with 99 seats. Since its founding in 1991, THEATER IM PALAIS is a popular venue for Berliners and visitors to Berlin. The house feels particularly committed to Berlin - as a city in constant change. Out of this affinity emerged the unique series BERLINER STORIES: The History of the Metropolis Berlin and the Stories of the People in an Ever-Growing City.
