Komödie am Kurfürstendamm
The Komödie am Kurfürstendamm remains one of the best addresses for sophisticated, metropolitan entertainment theatre in Germany in its transitional quarter at the Theater am Potsdamer Platz.
The traditional house - originally founded by Max Reinhardt on Kurfürstendamm in 1924 and managed by the Woelffer family since 1950 - features comedies, tabloids, shows, concerts and, during the Christmas season, plays for children. With its high-class programme of German world premieres of international plays, stage adaptations of feature films and classic comedies, it has become the second home of many well-known film and television actors. Well-known stars such as Katharina Thalbach, Tanja Wedhorn and Oliver Mommsen, Herbert Herrmann and Nora von Collande, Jochen Busse, Dominic Raacke, Katja Weitzenböck and many others play here. Well-known musicians and entertainers such as Ulrich Tukur and his Rhythm Boys or Gayle Tufts with their shows can also be seen frequently in the Komödie am Kurfürstendamm.
With the demolition of the parent houses on Kurfürstendamm and the move in 2023 to the second transitional quarter to the Theater at Potsdamer Platz, a new chapter begins in the more than 90-year history of the house. There have been crises, expropriation, even destruction, and finally reconstruction, but the respective directorates always felt committed to the genre of "comedy" - even if they were playing a serious piece from time to time. "For us, the comic has many facets. It is our pleasure if we succeed in dusting off classics. At the same time we are always happy to premiere modern entertainment theatre. We are also proud that many English, French, American or Italian comedies have their German premiere at our theatres," says former director Jürgen Wölffer, who handed over the management of the Kudamm stages to his son Martin in summer 2004. He carefully modernised the programme and attracted new audiences to the boulevard theatre with productions such as „Rosige Aussichten“, „Mord im Orientexpress“, "Wie es gefällt euch", "Gut gegen Nordwind", "Die 39 Stufen" or "Ziemlich beste Freunde".
