Staatsoper Unter den Linden
The Staatsoper Berlin combines a 275 year tradition with contemporary artistic quality like no other house. The Staatsoper Unter den Linden was founded in 1742 by Friedrich the Great and built by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff and is one of the most historical and artistically important theatres in the world. Richard Strauss, Erich Kleiber, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otmar Suitner and Herbert von Karajan have all left their personal mark on the house which offers an outstanding concert and opera programme. Daniel Barenboim has been the chief musical director for over twenty years and was voted conductor for life in 2000 by the orchestra. The artistic director since 2010 is Jürgen Flimm.
The Staatsoper's unique programme of operas and concerts covers historically accurate performances of baroque pieces, the central works of classical, romantic and modern operas and contemporary music and premieres of the highest musical level. The productions reflect a wish to examine the works from contemporary perspectives, challenging conventional readings while staying true to their content.
As well as an exceptional ensemble of singers such as Anna Prohaska and René Pape, the Staatsoper and orchestra, the Berliner Staatsoper hosts a first class cast with world stars such as Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón or Plácido Domingo and presents concerts with soloists and conductors like Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma and Zubin Mehta.
