Shakespeare Company Berlin
On the former rubble hill at the Insulaner, the Shakespeare Company Berlin has built its new open-air theater made of wood in 2022. The design by architect Ulrich Kirchner is reminiscent of a Globe Theater and, as in Shakespeare's lifetime, up to 330 spectators sit in a covered semi-circular grandstand, while around 70 guests can be seated under the open Berlin sky. The back wall of the grandstand is closed and, together with the roof, protects against distracting environmental influences.
The outer facade of the theater building, reminiscent of a wave, fits naturally into the grounds of the Berliner Bäder-Betriebe, on whose former sunbathing lawn of the Insulaner summer pool the theater is located.
At the Insulaner, the outdoor pool, the neighboring planetarium and the open-air stage combine to offer many opportunities to enjoy the summer. When the open-air swimming pool ends, the performances on stage begin: with irrepressible playfulness, the ensemble revives the Elizabethan performance practice of a powerful and lively popular theater with its own German translations. Shakespeare's poetry thus meets contemporary linguistic practices, inviting the audience into Shakespeare's inexhaustible and timeless cosmos.
