Schlosspark Theater
The historical Schlosspark Theatre in Berlin's Steglitz district has been run by Dieter Hallervorden since 2008 with private financing. A varied and changing programme with guest productions and prominent actors from film, theatre and television has breathed new life into the venue. Each season features around six new in-house productions, many of them premieres in Germany.
The Schlosspark Theatre opened in 1804 as part of the Steglitz manor house also known as the Wrangelschlösschen (Wrangel's Little Castle). The Prussian early classical style building was commissioned by Carl Friederich von Beyme from the architect Heinrich Gentz who worked from plans by David Gilly. In 1921 the theatre moved into what was originally the building's managerial quarters and specially converted by the architect Hans Heinrich Müller into a 440 seat venue. After the Second World War the theatre was run by Boleslaw Barlog for 27 years who was succeeded by Hans Lietzau and the legendary Boy Gobert. The postwar years saw the premieres of notable contemporary dramatic works such as Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" in 1953.
In 1950 the Schlosspark Theatre became the smaller venue of the municipal playhouse the Schiller Theater in Charlottenburg. During this time it accommodated great names such as Klaus Kinski, Erich Schellow, Johanna von Koczian, Klaus Kammer, Gudrun Genest, Bernhard Minetti, Berta Drews, Walter Franck, Martin Held, Marianne Hoppe, Carl Raddatz, Arthur Wiesner and Peter Ustinov.
When the Schiller Theatre ceased in 1993 the Schlosspark Theatre also stopped. In the years that followed, Heribert Sasse ran the theatre privately and from 2004 it was owned by the entertainment company Stage Entertainment but neither could match the theatre's former success and the theatre closed once again. It was not until December 2008 that it relaunched under Dieter Hallervorden's directorship. After extensive refurbishment the theatre was reopened for the 2009/10 season with a capacity of 473 seats. The motto of the Schlosspark Theatre has been their programme ever since: Spirit with humour.
