Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz
The Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, housed in a striking former cinema building by Erich Mendelsohn on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, is the largest spoken theatre in the West of Berlin. The politically and socially committed programme is influenced by a large number of directorial signatures , that also embrances new forms of dance and music theatre.
In addition to directors such as Thomas Ostermeier, artistic director of the Schaubühne since 1999, Herbert Fritsch, Milo Rau, Mina Salehpour, Lilja Rupprecht and Patrick Wengenroth, Falk Richter and Marius von Mayenburg - who are also associated with the Schaubühne as authors - the Schaubühne also regularly offers renowned directors from abroad a platform in Berlin. Currently, productions by Dead Centre, Rodrigo García, Angélica Liddell, Katie Mitchell, Simon McBurney and Anne-Cécile Vandalem can be seen at the Schaubühne.
The focus of the productions is the telling of stories - classical and contemporary - and the ensemble, which also includes film stars such as Lars Eidinger, Mark Waschke, Jörg Hartmann, Ursina Lardi and Nina Kunzendorf. The productions of the Schaubühne tour the globe every year with over a hundred performances. Up to three productions from the extensive repertoire can be seen daily in Berlin, regularly also with English and French surtitles.
The theatre was founded in 1962 under the name "Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer" as a private theatre with a politically and socially committed programme. In 1970, with director Peter Stein, a group of young theatre makers and actors came to the Schaubühne, who made theatre history with new forms of joint theatre work. In 1981 the Schaubühne moved to the former "Universum" cinema on the upper Kurfürstendamm, built by Erich Mendelsohn in 1928, and has since been called "Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz". The building was rebuilt between 1978-81 by the Berlin architect Jürgen Sawade and is listed as a historical monument. It has three venues, which can be used independently of each other or all together.
