Podewil
Podewil is the headquarters of the Kulturprojekte Berlin non-profit organisation. The completely renovated theatre in the building has established itself as the second home of the GRIPS Theatre since 2009 and the GRIPS theatre pedagogues have their studios here as well. In addition, the baroque palace in Berlin's Mitte district houses many other cultural projects such as the Cultural Education Initiative.
The building is a blend of a baroque palace on mediaeval vaults as well as new extensions, alterations made during the time of the East German Government and renovations after 1990. It is located in Klosterstraße, one of the oldest streets in Berlin, close to the original city wall. Its eponymous first resident was the Earl Heinrich von Podewil (1695-1760), who served Friedrich II as a war minister. In 1874 the palace was taken over by the state and housed the Brandenburg Provincial Museum (Märkische Provinzialmuseum). After a direct hit in the Second World War, the building was reopened in the 50s as the "Central Club House for Young People".
After a fire, the building was opened in 1970 as the "House of Youth Talent" and became one of the best loved cultural venues in East Berlin. After the reunification it distinguished itself under the name "Podewil - Centre for Contemporary Arts", becoming the production house and venue for dance, theatre, performance and new music between 1992 and 2004. Subsequently the organisation tesla berlin operated a lab for art and media here. The Kulturprojekte Berlin organisation, which is a consortium of the Berlin Cultural Events Management and the Educational Museum Service has been the main tenant since 2006.
The following organisations are housed in the building:
