Pfefferberg Theater
The Pfefferberg Theatre in Prenzlauer Berg offers shows for children and grown up theatre-lovers in the 243-seat, lovingly restored Pfefferberg beer hall. The founders of the Hexenkessel and their enchanting ensemble left Monbijou Park in Mitte at the end of 2015 bringing new productions, old favourites and much more to the Pfefferberg stage as well as the magic of Grimm’s fairy tales in thre Glaspalast. The theatre is also host to a variety of different artist groups.
The architecturally protected restaurant and saloon, like many buildings on the Pfefferberg site, was a ruin for many years. Opened in 1893 by Joseph Pfeffer as a ‘beer hall for the new Bavarian beer brewery at Schönhauser Allee 176’, by 1921 it had ceased to be a brewery and the saloon building had a wide variety of different uses. Destruction during the Second World War did the rest. During the GDR, the publishing house “Neues Deutschland” used the area before it reverted to the local public housing administration.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, a group of local residents and socially engaged people used the buildings for cultural and social initiatives. In 1990 they formed the Pfefferwerk Association for the Promotion of Urban Culture. During the years that followed, the association founded a wide variety of different venues in some of the buildings, establishing Pfefferberg’s reputation as a cultural site throughout Berlin.
The VIA (Network for Integrated Opportunities), founded in 2007, restored the remaining extremely dilapidated buildings from the ground up between 2011 - 2013. In 2013 the VIA Schankhalle Pfefferberg gGmbH founded an integrative business offering opportunities to people with disabilities. Alongside “Pfefferbräu - Restaurant and Brewery”, the Schankhalle Pfefferberg accommodates the Pfefferberg Theatre, two flexible venues for conferences and functions as well as the regular tango evenings with URQUIZA - Tango Argentino.
