Neuköllner Oper
The city and its people on stage
The Neuköllner Oper (Opera Neukölln) has established itself as the fourth opera house for contemporary musical theatre in Berlin. Pieces that react innovatively to contemporary and social processes have been created here since 1972. Since its foundation, the Neuköllner Oper has produced over 250 premieres and world premieres.
The Neuköllner Oper was created out of a wish to present the genre of opera as close to real life as possible. It was founded by the composer and church musician Winifried Radeke. Today he leads the three person board of directors comprising Bernhard Glocksin, Laura Hörold and Andreas Altenhof. The themes for the 8 - 10 premieres a year by the Neuköllner Oper are literally found on the street. Sited in Berlin's most vibrant district where the most varied ways of living, destinies and cultural traditions collide, this is where the effects of the social developments in Berlin's traditional migrant quarter are felt most acutely.
The artistic orientation of the Neuköllner Oper encompasses a great compositional diversity of themes and forms in all musical genres, be it re-working classical pieces, premieres of new musical works or crossover productions. Supporting the next generation is another important element running through the programme as is shown by the Oper's many collaborations with the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK) amongst others, the composer's Berlin Opera Prize as well as workshops with writers such as Feridun Zaimoglu. Another string to its bow is the international collaboration with institutions and groups working on alternative forms of music theatre.
Since 1988 the Neuköllner Oper has been based in the former assembly rooms in the passage off Karl-Marx-Straße built in 1909 by the architect Reinhold Kiez. It has seats for 220 in the main hall and 60 seats in the studio space.
