Kleines Theater
The Kleine Theater (Small Theatre) on the Südwestkorso in Friedenau has been a much regarded "gem" of literary and musical entertainment since 1974, attracting neighbours, theatre lovers from all over Berlin and surroundings as well as international visitors to Berlin. The intimate space of this Kammerspiel (chamber) theatre with its 93 seats and small bar has been directed by Karin Bares since 2006 who incorporates artistic director, managing director and resident director in one person.
The area is full of artistic history - in the previous century, many artists lived not far from the theatre in the so-called 'artists colony'. On the corner at Stubenrauchstraße 47 the singer Harry Frommermann founded the legendary Comedian Harmonists and close to the theatre in the Stubenrauchstraße Cemetery, Marlene Dietrich found her final resting place. Even today the theatre is surrounded by many galleries and artists' studios.
The Kleine Theater sees its role as host to Berlin premieres. All the pieces in the programme are being shown in Berlin for the first time and many are actually world premieres. There are up to 15 pieces in repertory each season, including entertaining musical homages to Frank Sinatra or Barbara Streisand and others. A strand of programming is 'BIOGRAPHIES' in which the lives of famous real but also fictitious characters are illuminated in plays or musical productions and with them a historical period.
