Ernst Busch Academy of Performing Arts
The Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts looks back on a tradition of over 100 years of drama training and is today one of the leading performing arts academies in the theatre world. Three stages offer students the opportunity to present their skills and the public the chance to discover young talents.
Since the summer of 2018, the Ernst Busch has been residing with all its departments at its new location in Berlin-Mitte, where the stages HfS Ernst Busch UNTEN and OBEN are located. In 2009, it had been decided to convert the former opera workshops at Zinnowitzer Straße 11 into the central location of the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst. The architectural firm O&O Baukunst was awarded the contract and added a 24-metre high stage tower with vertical wooden panelling and a glass theatre café to the old building from the 1950s. Today's bat Studiotheater at Belforter Str. 15 was founded in 1961 by Wolf Biermann and Brigitte Soubeyran as the Berliner Arbeiter Theater (formerly b.a.t.). In 2017, the renovation was also completed by the architectural firm O&O Baukunst. The main stage was rebuilt so that it can now be operated independently by the students.
The Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts trains in the following courses of study: Acting, Directing, Dramaturgy, Contemporary Puppetry, Choreography and Play&Object. The focus of the training is on the personality of each student, and this from the first to the last day of study. One of the main pillars of the training concept is the teaching of artistic skills and knowledge at the highest level by teachers, most of whom are active in theatre practice themselves. The second pillar is the close, intensive contact between lecturers and students. Thanks to excellent teaching and outstanding support structures, the university exerts an enormous attraction on applicants and renowned professionals from Germany and abroad. Conversely, many colleagues from the university work as sought-after guests at partner institutes around the globe. The Ernst Busch School of Dramatic Arts aims to provide a solid basis for both teaching and learning, and to do so in a practical way.
