HALLE TANZBÜHNE BERLIN
The Halle Tanzbühne Berlin (Halle Dance Theatre Berlin) is the production house and venue of the dance ensemble toula limanaios and guests. The Greek choreographer Toula Linamaios and composer Ralf R. Ollertz established their rehearsal space in the historically listed 19th century sports hall in 2000 and it has subsequently been the workplace of many other artists as well. The venue has been a privately owned theatre since 2003, seating 140 people and has established an international reputation as a venue for contemporary dance.
Situated under horse chestnut trees in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, in a romantic courtyard of what was once a police station, the finely ornamented brick building possesses an enchanted run-down appeal, "as if Christoph Marthaler had left one of his stage designs here."
At the beginning of 2012 the Swiss foundation Edith Maryon bought the land, saving it from property speculation and leased the building to the founders of the HALLE, thereby ensuring the dance venue in the longer term. From 2015 to 2016 the HALLE was extended and renovated with lottery funds. Their productions are co-produced with the Mousonturm Frankfurt/M, the Musiktheater Baltoppen, the Athens International Dance Festival and the Bregenzer Festspiele. The HALLE presents dance that is awake, critical and bold, concerned for humankind and made by and for the people.
