Maxim Gorki Theater
The Maxim Gorki Theater is the smallest of Berlin's municipal theaters and is located in the former Singakademie on Unter den Linden Boulevard. The theater was built in 1827 to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel as the first public concert hall in Berlin. After its destruction in World War II and reconstruction, the building reopened in 1952 as the Maxim Gorki Theater and quickly became the most important venue for contemporary theater in the GDR. In 1988, Thomas Langhoff staged Volker Braun's "Die Übergangsgesellschaft" here as a swan song to the GDR, despite state censorship.
Since the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Shermin Langhoff has been artistic director of the Maxim Gorki Theater; she feels an obligation to the theater's political and resistant past. Starting with the 2022/2023 season, the house director Oliver Frljić will serve in an advisory capacity as artistic co-director. Alongside Oliver Frljić, Johannes Kirsten, senior dramaturg, is a member of the artistic direction .
In its program, the Gorki reflects a diversified society in times of ongoing economic and political crises and intensifying social and cultural conflicts. It sees itself as a place that is open to all people, regardless of their origins, regardless of whether they live in Berlin as a result of flight, exile or immigration.
In addition to productions of classics, the artistic formats reflect the aesthetic diversity of contemporary theater and include literary premieres, contemporary plays, and research projects that the 25-member ensemble realizes with the house directors Nurkan Erpulat, Oliver Frljić, Sebastian Nübling, Yael Ronen, and other renowned directors*.
With the studio stage Studio Я, the Gorki has established another platform for discussions and the presentation of work processes. With the theater education program Gorki X, everyone from amateurs to professionals is invited to join in and experiment at the Gorki.
