Brotfabrik
The Brotfabrik Bühne (Bread Factory Theatre) in the Weissensee district of Berlin is an independent venue for touring shows and co-productions from Berlin's independent scene as well as national and international groups. The programme, comprising around 300 performances a year, evidence a diverse range of forms and genres, from plays, performance, dance and musical theatre to improvisation, puppet and object theatre. Young artists and groups regularly perform in the 40-80 seat auditorium alongside established theatre makers. Another focus of the programme is the productions for children.
The Brotfabrik Bühne is part of the culture and art centre Brotfabrik, the name of which hints at the building's genesis. In 1890 the master baker Kohler from Weissensee opened his bakery, "Micheal Kohler Bread Factory. The First Zerpenschleuse Country Bakery". The Brotfabrik building itself was started in 1914, however, was extended in 1929 and slightly damaged in the Second World War. When the master baker at the time fled to West Berlin in 1952 it closed down and was then used as a sparkling water factory, a work ware shop and finally an industrial kitchenware suppliers.
In March 1986 the nearby Berlin Weissensee School of Art opened a youth club called "An der Weißenseer Spitze" (On the Weissensee Point) which became an important cultural attraction before it was closed after two months because of its inappropriate programme. The local council took over and the youth club was re-opened a year later. Besides the cinema, concerts and theatre there was now a café as well as visual art exhibitions. After the fall of the Berlin Wall the Brotfabrik cultural centre was established in May 1990. Since then the theatre, cinema, gallery and literature projects as well as the café have been placed on equal footing and developed independently of one another artistically. The Brotfabrik has been run by the "Glashaus. Verein der Nutzer der Brotfabrik e.V." (Glasshouse. Brotfabrik Users' Club). Events at the Brotfabrik have attracted many awards.
