Ballhaus Ost
Ballhaus Ost in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg is a venue for independent theatre, performance and dance. As an experimental platform for the most diverse forms of contemporary theatre, it is the place to discover and experience new forms of artistic examination of contemporary living conditions. Also non-German speakers find many interesting productions in the programme.
Housed in the former celebration and assembly hall of the Free Religious Community of Berlin, Ballhaus Ost is the place of activity for established independent groups and artists (such as the foam puppet theatre Das Helmi, the choreographer Christoph Winkler or the performance collective vorschlag:hammer). At the same time, it offers lesser-known artists from Berlin's vibrant independent theatre scene space to present their work and develop new aesthetics.
Ballhaus Ost was founded in 2006 by the directors Uwe Moritz Eichler, Philipp Reuter and the actress Anne Tismer as an artist-run venue, after the hall had been used as as a »worker's casino« during the GDR and as a billiard hall and club after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since 2011 Daniel Schrader and Tina Pfurr have been running Ballhaus Ost, developing it into a venue relevant to the structure of Berlin's independent scene, curated with curiosity for new artistic forms and collaborations and representing a young, queer community of artists.
