aufBruch KUNST GEFÄNGNIS STADT
aufBruch (breakout) prison theatre is an independent theatre project in Berlin that artistically examines social and political processes and cycles. The prison institution itself serves as aufBruch's prime example.
By excluding the prisoners from the rest of society, it creates a new one albeit closed to the public. This is the starting point of what aufBruch confronts.
aufBruch sees its work as providing the artistic connection between the world inside the prison walls and the one outside. Its theatre is the provocation for individual reflection and the starting point for a respectful encounter between perpetrators and the rest of the population - both of whom are parts of society.
For the last 18 years, aufBruch has been working continuously as part of the prison timetable in Berlin's institutions and since this year is involved in of all seven of Berlin's prisons for the first time. A characteristic of aufBruch is a large, expressive ensemble of prisoners on stage and an experienced artistic team from outside guaranteeing a highly professional context.
