ACUD Theater
The ACUD Theatre in Berlin's Mitte district has been a place for young, innovative and diverse theatre since 1990, building bridges between acting, dance, performing art, clowning and puppetry. As an independent theatre, it supports national and international theatre pieces by young groups and solo artists. ACUD Theatre organises festivals and initiates multicultural events on political themes, engages with theatre with homeless people, people with handicaps (e.g. for people with sight and hearing impairments) as well as making precarious experimentation possible.
ACUD Theatre is located in the ACUD art and cultural association on Veteranenstraße in Berlin's Mitte. As part of the ACUD artists' house, run by the ACUD association between 1990 and 2014, the ACUD Theatre belongs to one of the few remaining independent theatres that were established around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Between 2004-2006 the ACUD artists' house was extensively refurbished but unfortunately had to register as bankrupt in 2010 due to spiralling renovation costs. After many failed attempts to find an investor, a group of Berlin-based artists acquired the building in 2014, saving it from compulsory purchase and securing the future of the cultural institute and thereby the ACUD Theatre on a long term basis.
Each year around 120 performances take place in the 70-seat theatre, around 90% of them new productions, Berlin premieres or world premieres. There are also readings by authors in the original language and political discussion forums, workshops and theatre sport events.
