Who Can Have a Stage? On Artistic Freedom and Deplatforming
Reflexes & Reflections 2025
With
Emanuel Gat, Nora Sternfeld, Deniz Yücel
Chaired by
Elke Buhr – Monopol Magazine
Choreographer Emanuel Gat, whose work “Freedom Sonata” is presented as part of “Reflexes & Reflections”, was forced to defend himself on French radio for using music by Kanye West when the latter attracted attention in autumn 2022 for heavily anti-Semitic remarks. Deniz Yücel, writer, journalist and an active member of PEN Berlin, has repeatedly adopted a clear stance against boycotts and cancel culture. Together with art theorist Nora Sternfeld, they will discuss the possibilities and limits of free artistic expression in Western Europe and consider how artistic freedom can be preserved in the face of a dangerous rationale of boycotts and counter-boycotts.
