Schwarzwasser
By Elfriede Jelinek
A Spanish island, an Austrian politician, the niece of a Russian oligarch: a toxic combination. Because a secretly installed camera records as the man promises to grant the woman full reign over Austria’s national media landscape with the aim of strengthening his own power. As ever, in Schwarzwasser, Elfriede Jelinek is concerned with fundamental issues: In expert fashion, she connects current events with ancient tragedy and shows how right-wing populist positions spread with furious speed, like a virus. Director Christina Tscharyiski has chosen an entirely female cast to explore the godlike image of the male right-wind populist which Jelinek outlines with her habitual sharpness of tongue.
