Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin I
Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin I
Helmut Lachenmann approaches the tone of the piano as if through a magnifying glass in his masterpiece “Ausklang”. He transcribes characteristics of pianistic playing and tonal structures of the grand piano to the orchestra which is thereby transformed into a “super piano”. This exceptional role is undertaken by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin with Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the piano. The orchestra’s chief conductor Vladimir Jurowski also succeeds in sharpening the senses in the 11th Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich. The work is subtitled “The Year 1905” and is far more than a mere personal commentary on Russian history, like many of the works of the composer who during his lifetime was alternately celebrated and criticised in his native country.
