Choreographies by Sharon Eyal and Ohad Naharin
Ohad Naharin is a world-renowned Israeli choreographer and the inventor of the Gaga movement language, which, originating from the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, has now spread globally and is taught worldwide. To allow dancers to form a personal and emotional connection with the material and the moment of the performance beyond the choreography itself, the Gaga method works towards complete emotional openness.
Naharin’s famous and ever-relevant piece Minus 16 makes this very theme its focal point. With energetic soundtracks of popular Cuban and Israeli music, the piece is individually interpreted and powerfully brought to life by a large ensemble. The positive dynamic is infectious, and the contagion is intentional. Since its world premiere in 1999 at the Nederlands Dans Theater, the piece has regularly garnered standing ovations—a captivating event for both the audience and the dancers.
SAABA is the fourth work by the internationally celebrated choreographer Sharon Eyal, presented by the Staatsballett Berlin. Once again, she creates a fascinating and mysterious universe of movement formations and rhythms. The pulsating electronic music by Ori Lichtik blends with the more concrete melodic patterns of existing music tracks, creating an oscillating soundscape. Sharon Eyal’s distinctive style, characterised by hypnotically pulsing energy, unfolds its full impact against this expressive auditory backdrop.
