Rachen, Mundhöhlen und andere akustische Räume
Maulwerker present four positions of performative sound art – at the interface of composed music and sound art. The invited artists investigate the materiality and physicality of sound. Objects are explored for their sonority. Language serves as musical material and is cross-faded with the object sounds and actions. The relationship of sound to the human body, the relationship of the body to space, of sound in space locates the presented works in the intermediate zone between concert and performance art.

Maulwerker are specialists in vocal experiments and the performativity of music. They work with an expanded notion of music that integrates elements from performance art, conceptual art and contemporary dance. Especially in their successful series maulwerker performing music at Ballhaus Ost they thematically investigate the conditions and consequences of experimental music and musical performativity. Over the years of working together, the ensemble has developed a specific know-how to design processes of open scores and present them with physical presence, accuracy and vocal virtuosity: Choreographed sounds, composed actions, audible gestures and visible music in both obvious and subversive counterpoints create moments of synaesthesia. The transdisciplinary extensions combine acoustic with visual and spatial perception. The focus is on hearing: maulwerker performing music.
