Concert with Tabea Zimmermann, Kirill Gerstein
She can make the dark sound of the viola glow: Tabea Zimmermann, this year’s winner of the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, has declared that she would like to penetrate to the musically essential – which she succeeds in doing time and again, here together with her partner at the piano, Kirill Gerstein. This concert’s sonata programme, with works by Hindemith and Shostakovich, ranges from the idyll to the abyss. There is also a special repertoire discovery: Rebecca Clarke’s emotionally charged Viola Sonata, which must be ranked as one of the most significant early 20th-century chamber music works.
