For a long time, jazz was an exclusively male domain in which only the role of singer was left for women. Fortunately, this has changed in recent decades. Female instrumentalists are commonplace in most European jazz scenes, festivals and concert series. Consequently, Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic is also devoting its last concert of the season to women, and for the first time it is a “carte blanche” programme – a surprise concert in which the names of the outstanding female jazz interpreters will not be announced in advance.
