Heroines of Sound 2025: Day 2
Rojin Sharafi / Meitar Ensemble / Nour Sokhon / Yara Mekawei
The second concert evening of the festival opens with the sound artist and composer Rojin Sharafi, whose sonic textures, influenced by traditional Persian music and poetry, noise, ambient and folk, are situated between tradition and new beginnings.
Afterwards, the Meitar Ensemble makes its festival debut. Works by Israeli, German and Iranian composers, composed exclusively for the ensemble, will be performed in Europe for the first time. Sarah Nemtsov explores “blind spots”, which can also be understood as a metaphor for our current social and political realities. Anahita Abbasi takes an even more radical approach: Through pulsating layers of noise and multi-channel throat clearing, she lets us experience a darkly hissing soundscape. Julia Mihály undertakes a sonic investigation of the desert as a space and historical archive, while Brigitta Muntendorf creates a multilayered web of fragments and analogue-digital forms of expression. Sigalit Landau’s haunting video work of her performance with a hula hoop made from barbed wire on the beach of Tel Aviv represents both a personal and political act.
The evening ends with two powerful live performances by artists Nour Sokhon and Yara Mekawei. Bringing together the ancient and the modern, their sets take us on sonic journeys that follow the traces of migration, city life in Lebanon and Sufi philosophy and history.
