A Midsummer Night's Dream
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Ballet by Edward Clug after William Shakespeare Music by Milko Lazar (commissioned work)
Edward Clug’s staging of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream , set to music specially composed by Milko Lazar, merges dream and reality on stage. Shakespeare’s comedy intertwines several storylines: Two couples flee from a world of rigid societal norms and find themselves in a realm of fairies. Hermia loves Lysander, but her father, Egeus, insists she marry Demetrius, who is, in turn, pursued by Helena. In the background looms the engagement of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, which serves as a symbol of the impending wedding and the restoration of order in the human world. Meanwhile, Oberon, King of the Fairies, and Queen Titania are locked in a bitter dispute, the consequences of which ripple far beyond the fairy realm. Oberon’s mischievous servant, Puck, creates emotional chaos among the lovers. At the same time, a group of craftsmen, led by Peter Quince, rehearses a play in the same forest. The clumsy yet ambitious Nick Bottom becomes entangled in the intrigues of the fairy world. Through magical interventions, the characters’ relationships are thrown into disarray until the spell is finally broken and balance is restored. Edward Clug’s interpretation highlights the timeless essence of the play: Shakespeare’s world, where the boundaries between love, deception, and self-discovery blur.
