"Now is the moment. Now we have met, and have come together. Now let us talk, let us tell stories. Who is he? Who is she? I am infinitely curious and do not know what is to come", Virginia Woolf writes in "The Waves" in 1931. In a polyphonic stream of consciousness, the novel tells of the lifelong friendships of six very different people, of intense encounters, of childhood, ageing and death. The music theatre collective [in]operabilities delves into Woolf's flow of language and circles around a central scene of the novel: a reunion of friends in a London pub. With playfulness and melancholy, the ensemble transforms "The Waves" into a multi-sensorial musical theatre piece made of words, signing, sound, vibrations, touch and light. Artists between 16 and 80 years old, with different styles of perception and expertise, share the stage. In rhythmically interwoven solos, the six performers present themselves and their different generations and ways of life. On both the inside and the outside, the characters seek contact with themselves, each other and the world. Performing on stage are German Dance Prize winner Sophia Neises, avant-garde artist Matteo Fargion, 16-year-old performer Marla Breuker, emerging theatre maker Emil Leske, actress Christine Korfant from Hamburg and virtuoso percussionist Sabrina Ma from Berlin. Using a multisensory approach, [in]operabilities tests the existing borders between perception styles, languages and forms of expression. An exploration of the cosmos of the opera led the group to a questioning of its topicality and accessibility - and to the English play on words' opera-abilities'.
