Yorleny Cardozo Peña is a Colombian artist and art educator who developed the artistic intervention La voz de la montaña as part of her research fellowship in Berlin for the exhibition of the Ethnological Museum.

This intervention is part of the collaborative education project Schutzwesen – Die Superkräfte der Natur (Protective Beings – The Superpowers of Nature) and aims to promote sustainable ecological awareness among children in both Berlin and Colombia. A central focus is empowering children to feel capable of addressing climate change and species extinction by strengthening their own “superpowers.”

“The statues in the Archaeological Park of San Agustín, made of volcanic rock, bear animal traits such as claws, fangs, or wings. They not only represent the qualities of nature but also reflect its strength, protection, and power. The realization of the magnificence of living beings stayed with me, inspiring me to collect insects, seeds, and leaves from the forest where the statues reside. In my approach, science and artistic associations go hand in hand. This is a collaborative project in education and mediation between the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH) and the Ethnological Museum.

Yorleny Cardozo Peña: In 2012, she earned her Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad del Cauca. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Cultural Management and Museology and works as an educator at the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH). Her work explores the collective memory of communities around Pitalito, capturing through drawings and paintings—created in nature and while traveling—people, cultures, and their relationships with plants and animals.

Yorleny Cardozo Peña is a CoMuse Fellow at the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art in February and March 2025.

CoMuse – The Collaborative Museum is an initiative of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art that aims to develop multiperspective approaches to collection-based research and to test new formats for collaborative processes. Its goal is to sustainably intensify the decolonization and diversification of museum practices.
