The Silent Trabants (Die stillen Trabanten)
by Clemens Meyer
A snack bar salesman secretly smokes cigarettes with his neighbour after work in the hallway of a prefabricated building. A security guard falls in love with one of the residents at the protective fence of the residence for foreigners. After breaking into his apartment, a man cannot stay at home and suddenly stands in the living room of an old woman. Another woman leaves her husband, who looks for hours, perhaps days, at the indicator light of his radio alarm clock. A passionate train driver on the night shift sees a laughing man on the tracks too late, and a cleaning lady makes friends with a hairdresser in the station pub. Clemens Meyer quietly tells of nocturnal encounters on the outskirts of the big city, in which memories and longings merge, sad and hopeful, unsentimental and full of love for the characters you think you know and yet know nothing about.
The author Clemens Meyer has received numerous awards for his work, including the Leipzig Book Fair Prize, and has been nominated for the Man Booker International Prize 2017. The film adaptations of his novel Als wir träumten and his narrative In den Gängen ran in the Berlinale competition.
