"The Navigator" USA 1924
Directed by Buster Keaton
Starring Buster Keaton and Kathryn McGuire
16mm film print, approx. 71 minutes (+ 25-minute trailer)
A masterpiece of "nonsense comedy" by Buster Keaton. This inventive comedy about two wealthy layabouts who, after turbulent entanglements, find themselves alone on a deserted ocean liner, became an unparalleled pas de deux in the history of grotesque films. Surreal punchlines, breakneck stunts, and one of the first underwater sequences in film history elevated filmmaker Keaton to the Olympus of the most successful film comedians of his time with "The Navigator."
The trailer "The Boat" (1922) also shows Buster Keaton on an adventurous sea voyage – with a bathtub as a lifeboat, schnitzel to fill the holes, and the whole family in tow.
Both films will be accompanied live on the grand piano by silent film pianist Richard Siedhoff and shown with a rattling 16mm projector.
