The Fishbowl
…to hear you / for you to be heard / in the cold water…
Lucy is a human. Lucy is a fish. Lucy is the heroine of The Fishbowl. She flings open the windows wide to catch her breath, to face her fear of life, of love, of survival, of loneliness amid the crowd. The city—Athens in crisis—, an “explosive” breakup, a suicide, stories and memories, obsessions and joys. Is there life after the loudest bang outside? After the loudest bang within us?
The bold, multifaceted performing artist Zoe Xanthopoulou directs and embodies the heroine of Eugenia Daglas’ torrential play, whose writing is marked by poetic realism. The production will premiere at Theaterforum Kreuzberg e.V. in Berlin on June 25th, running for only four performances, produced by the {Just/art}* project. The performance is in Greek with German subtitles.
As the playwright notes about her play (or theatrical comment, as she herself characterises her work:
“Summer of 2012. In the midst of the crisis ravaging Greece, prompted by yet another suicide I heard (it was heard!) on the news, I overflowed: Instead of crying, I wrote. The figure of Lucy emerged over a few nights, rising out of protests, soup kitchens, and layoffs. With deep sensitivity but also humour, my fragile heroine speaks of the small everyday pain she endures, as we all do, and the great pain—the pain for the country—that ‘healed’ all the small ones…
