Around 1850, the small town of Concord, Massachusetts, became the birthplace of American transcendentalism. Half a century later, Charles Ives paid homage to this school of thought with his Second Piano Sonata. Pianist Bertrand Chamayou pairs this rarely performed work with excerpts from Franz Liszt’s “Years of Pilgrimage”—both a musical travel journal and a compositional search for the self.
