Abonnementkonzert V
Harrison Birtwistle, one of the protagonists of the Manchester School who has been committed to new English music since the 1950s, has written an orchestral work for Sir Simon Rattle. His gift to the British conductor is combined in a programme with Mahler’s last completed symphony, which once again evokes the spirit of the Romantic period, but at the same time symbolises a departure into modernity.
