Open air season 2025
By Berlin BühnenWe present Berlin's open-air stages - from the classic open-air stage in the idyllic Citadel Park to the wooden amphitheater on the former airfield - with all the fun information about the current season.
Open air stages
Wir wünsche euch einen tollen Sommer!
LUFTSCHLOSS TEMPELHOFER FELD
Directly on the Tempelhofer Feld
The Luftschloss Tempelhofer Feld open-air theater is located in the middle of the former airfield. The open wooden amphitheater is operated by the ATZE Musiktheater. Enjoy the warming evening sun on the bright wooden grandstand and enjoy the varied program at affordable prices with theater performances, concerts, DJ sets, festivals and offers for adults, families and young people. Incidentally, the idea for the Luftschloss was born in the Fliegerwerkstatt - a youth facility with a focus on handicrafts in the Tempelhof Airport building complex.
When is the theatre playing?
May 10 to September 21
And what do I wear?
The castle in the air doesn't give you any instructions here. Come as you feel comfortable and according to the weather. You can also come in roller skates from the runway.
Seasonal snacks and drinks
The beer garden offers cool drinks, draught beer, summer cocktails as well as coffee and cake with whipped cream, ice cream, filled Stangenbörek and Italian Pane Premio with vegan or vegetarian toppings. The theater pays attention to sustainability as well as ecological and regional products in its food and drink offerings.
And if it rains?
The stage and grandstand are covered. Only in the event of extreme storms or rain will the event be cancelled at short notice and all spectators informed. The Luftschloss has plenty of rain ponchos available for anyone sitting in uncovered seats who has forgotten their rain gear at home.
UFAFABRIK
The International Culture Centre in Tempelhof
The former UFA film copying works in Tempelhof are now a true cultural oasis. Studios, dance studios and stages as well as Berlin's oldest wholemeal bakery have found a home under the green roofs of the former factory buildings. In summer, the covered open-air stage forms the heart of the area. The international and interdisciplinary stage program with various artists and up-and-coming talents offers music, cabaret, dance, circus and variety shows. The ufaFabrik shows par excellence what living and working together and ecologically sustainable cultural production can look like - we therefore recommend a short walk to get to know the history of the site even better.
When is the theater playing?
May 29 to September 7
And what do I wear?
Whatever you like: flower power vintage, jeans rolled up or short, T-shirt, sneakers, leather or light knitwear - everything is chic.
Snacks and drinks of the season
The “Rudi & Rosa” café with its sunny outdoor area offers a wide variety of food and drinks. We particularly recommend the Vinho Verde and the naturally cloudy Radler. The regional cuisine serves tarte flambée, tapas and schnitzel. During the week, you can also enjoy a changing summer lunch menu with one vegetarian and one meat/fish dish.
And if it rains?
The events also take place in the rain, as you stay dry under the white roof of the summer stage even in bad weather.
SHAKESPEARE COMPANY
At the Insulaner in Steglitz
Founded in 1999, the Shakespeare Company has had its home for several years in the theater at the Insulaner - directly on the grounds of the outdoor swimming pool next to the Wilhelm Foerster Observatory. The summer stage is particularly well known for Shakespearean popular theater. From the wooden semi-circular grandstand, you can look out onto the stage surrounded by trees and immerse yourself in another time. This summer, the passionate and enthusiastic ensemble is performing nine productions, including one premiere. You don't have to be a Shakespeare expert to enjoy this lively and audience-oriented theater - you can spend wonderful summer nights here even without any previous knowledge.
When is the theater playing?
June 13 to September 13
And what do I wear?
Come as you like. Warmer clothing is recommended in cooler weather - warm blankets are available if required. Attention: spiked heels could get stuck in the forest floor. Mosquito spray is always a smart option.
Seasonal snacks and drinks
You can enjoy quiches, pretzels, sandwiches and snacks in the secluded summer night garden. Or you can order a "picnic basket for two" including a picnic table. At the bar you will find wine, Prosecco, beer, lemonade and tea.
And if it rains?
The Shakespeare Company plays in all weathers (except in storms and heavy rain from 10 litres per square metre). The grandstand and stage are covered. If you are sitting in the uncovered stalls, you should bring a rain cape depending on the weather. Rain ponchos are available for unforeseen downpours.
MONBIJOU THEATRE
Next to the Museum Island in Mitte
The Sommerbühne Monbijou Theater is the wooden amphitheatre on the Spree opposite the Bode Museum. The premiere of Goethe's Faust took place on this site in the former Monbijou Palace - it doesn't get much more theatrical than this. Make yourself comfortable on the grandstand with a view of the urban backdrop near Museum Island and enjoy the theater experience. In addition, the theater performances here have English subtitles. This year's program includes two newly staged Molière comedies and the popular improv ensemble Die Gorillas aka “Theatersport”.
When is the theatre playing?
May 1 to September 29
Which premieres can you expect?
• “Bürger Edelmann”, June 12
• “Don Juan”, June 19
And what do I wear?
Come as you are. Whether in sweatpants or a tuxedo - just come along and have a nice evening.
Snacks and drinks of the season
There is a small catering area around the theater: the Monbijou beach bar, which provides summery lightness. Here you can get pizza from an original Italian wood-fired oven and try a variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic summer drinks.
And if it rains?
A large part of the grandstand is not covered. We would therefore always pack a rain poncho and jacket, jumper or similar just in case.
GLOBE BERLIN
People's theatre in Charlottenburg
The Globe has big plans: the reconstruction of the former Schwäbisch Hall Globe Theatre along with a multifunctional extension as a workshop stage, foyer and restaurant. Until the financial means are gathered, the ensemble is performing on a catwalk-like ring of stacked wooden components of the future Globe. Here you can sit in the middle of the action in the open air. Surrounded by nature and an urban backdrop, the Globe offers spectacular, sensual and audience-oriented theatre for people of all ages and close to current social issues. What makes it special: Many plays are performed bilingually.
When is the theater playing?
June 20 to September 13
Which premiere can you expect?
• „Macht.Krieg.Frieden (?)“, June 20
And what do I wear?
You don't need evening wear or a dinner jacket at the Globe. The dress code is casual and the same applies here: check the weather forecast before you go and take a warmer jacket or umbrella to be on the safe side.
Snacks and drinks of the season
The Sommerbühne is currently developing its culinary offering with a special focus on sustainability. Look forward to organic and natural wine from small winegrowers and beer from local breweries.
And if it rains?
We also play in the rain. The event will only be cancelled in the event of a severe weather warning - in which case you can either have your ticket refunded or rebook for another date.
OPEN-AIR STAGE AT THE CITADEL
A green oasis in Spandau
The open-air stage at the citadel is embedded in an enchanting natural setting. It is located in the landscape conservation area on the so-called Zitadellenglacis, a rising area in front of the fortress that was once used for defense. On the historic stage from 1921, the “Kulturhaus Spandau” offers a varied program. From concerts, including this year's popular and free "Umsonst & Draußen" series, to theater and poetry slams, there is something for everyone. In the summer vacations, the “Berliner Kindertheater” rounds off the offer with drama fun for families with children aged 4 and over. To celebrate Pippi's 80th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the "Sommer-Familientheater" series, the ensemble will be performing “Pippi Longstocking” with red pigtails, freckles and lots of acting fun.
When is the theater playing?
May 31 to September 10
Which premiere can you expect?
• “Pippi Longstocking”, from July 15
And what do I wear?
There is no dress code at the Freilichtbühne. So come as you feel comfortable.
Snacks and drinks of the season
The gastronomic offer is usually coordinated with the content of the play.
And if it rains?
We also play in the rain. The event will only be cancelled in the event of a severe weather warning - in which case you can either have your ticket refunded or rebook for another date.
GUSTAV-BÖSS OPEN-AIR THEATRE
In the centre of Jungfernheide in Charlottenburg
The Naturtheater is the summer home of aufBruch KUNST GEFÄNGNIS STADT - a free and independent theater project that has been working with the Berlin prison system since 1997. In addition to various prisons, the ensemble performs at the Gustav Böss open-air stage in summer. For the open-air season, a mixed ensemble of prisoners, ex-prisoners, actors and Berlin citizens come together. The Gustav-Böss-Freilichtbühne is located in the middle of an idyllic forest ambience in Jungfernheide. This summer, the aufBruch Open Air ensemble will also be performing “Titus Andronicus” in an empty prison yard in Tegel Prison from June 3 to 27.
When is the theater playing?
August 27 to September 13
And what do I wear?
There is no dress code, but on some days long shirts and pants protect you from mosquitoes. Therefore: pack a mosquito spray or apply cream beforehand - also to your neck and ankles.
Snacks and drinks of the season
The Kulturbiergarten offers you a large selection of hearty food and drinks. With giant meatballs, roast potatoes and cheese spaetzle as well as draught beer, wine and soft drinks, you can start the evening at the theater feeling refreshed. The offer is complemented by a seasonal menu with typical seasonal products such as asparagus or mushrooms.
And if it rains?
The Gustav Böss open-air theater does not offer covered seating. You should therefore dress appropriately for the weather and pack a rain poncho in case of dark clouds. Performances are canceled in the event of severe storms.
ASTRID LINDGREN STAGE
At the Freizeit- und Erholungszentrum in Köpenick
The Astrid Lindgren Summer Stage in the inner courtyard of the FEZ has a very special backdrop: a stage on a large pool of water. Here you can make yourself comfortable on the steps with large cushions and embark on great adventures with Pippi Longstocking. Because Pippi makes the world just the way she likes it, and you can make up the most wonderful pranks and jokes with her.
When is the theater playing?
Unfortunately, the Astrid Lindgren Summer Stage will not be performed this season. We very much hope that it will work again next year. You can still experience the best children's theater at the FEZ throughout the summer - albeit not in the open air.
