Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, is among the great mythical figures of European history. Since her life and death in the 15th century artists down the ages have told and retold her story from a range of ideological perspectives. Walter Braunfels' SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF ST JOAN provides us with a set of eight musical images, each one of them a self-contained unit bursting with colour and musical plasticity. He uses these individual miniatures to shine a spotlight on the stations of Jeanne's life, on the oppressive despair caused by English occupation, on her undaunted hopes for redemption and on people's faith in the Maid as God's redeemer against all odds.
